Go Outside and Play!
The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, so it’s the perfect time to get outside for fun healthy activities! Whether you lace up your shoes for a run or a hike, strap on your bike helmet for a ride, or brave the still chilly lakes in a kayak, being out in the fresh air and sunshine this time of year is not only good for the body, it’s good for the spirit after a long Michigan winter. It feels great to head outside without all those layers and mittens and boots and hats!
Setting some healthy goals is a great way to get motivated to get moving on a regular basis. The Mercy Health Seaway Run/Lake Michigan Half Marathon is only 3 months away, why not get registered and get it on the calendar? Race Director Andrew Buikema has created some great training plans for each distance (5k, 10k, and Half Marathon) that are fun and easy to follow – you can even download them to your Google calendar and set reminders. The Half Marathon plan has just started, so you can get started to today and get to the finish line in June! Check it out at seawayrun.com/training and get ready to go! Another healthy bonus to being part of this fun event – proceeds go to Muskegon Rotary Club’s 1 in 21 Healthy Muskegon County Initiative and the Muskegon YMCA to support their work to help our community be healthier. And if you’re not a runner, you can walk in the Community Walk or any of the timed events – the goal is to get moving at any pace. We’ll see you at the starting line on June 23!
If you’d rather get some exercise on two wheels instead of two feet, consider signing up for Ride United on June 16. You can choose to ride 6, 25, 50 or 100 miles through our beautiful lakeshore communities, beginning and ending in downtown Muskegon at Hackley Park.
